Breast Cancer Awareness Month
It’s Wellness Wednesday!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month! Cancer screenings have declined due to COVID restrictions and concerns. If you need to, get in there! But today I wanted to talk about prevention.
It’s important to note that when talking about the prevention of breast cancer, we are talking about the prevention of all cancers and chronic diseases. What helps to prevent one, helps to prevent others. If you take nothing else away from this post, I want it to be this:
Your genes determine only about 20% of your health “destiny” throughout your lifetime.
What that means is that Y O U control about 80% of it! That’s great news and should be empowering! Here’s another thing to note. Cancer does not just “show up” one day. In many cases (but not all), it takes years, and in some cases, decades, to even be detectable by imaging. Most tumors are slow-growing. Imaging is incredibly important, but so is thinking about prevention because you may be able to intervene. Most cancer cells are really just normal cells that go rogue and are not properly “disposed” of by the body (called apoptosis – programmed cell death), and then replicated. What you are doing today, influences whether or not these cells may become a problem in the future.
Let’s look at some of the most effective things you can do today to prevent the crazy growth of these cells in the future. Your future self will thank you!
1. Stop smoking.
2. Stop drinking alcohol.
3. Eat lots of fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes (PLANTS!).
4. Limit the consumption of animal products.
5. Work to improve your stress levels.
6. Be active – the more, the better!
7. Be safe in the sun.
8. Work with a professional to address nutrient deficiencies and unchecked viral loads.
