National Apple Day!
It’s Wellness Wednesday!
It’s apple season! And I could not be more excited! Each fall, I swear, I consume at least my weight in apples! They’re just so darn yummy! Not to mention quick, easy, and completely zero-waste. Let’s take a closer look at the health benefits of eating apples.
Apples are a great source of vitamin C, pectin, and other fiber (remember, fiber = a healthy digestive system and lower instance of disease). In fact, one medium sized unpeeled apple provides more than 10 percent the recommended intake of fiber. The pectin in apples helps provide insoluble fiber which helps with regulating trips to the bathroom and can help improve both constipation and diarrhea. An analysis of over 85 studies found that apples are associated with reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, asthma, and type 2 diabetes. Most of the disease prevention power comes from the flavonoids in apples, such as quercetin.
Most recently, published scientific literature has found that eating two apples every day helps to modulate the human gut microbiome. In simple terms, they help your tummy digest food! Additional studies are currently in the works to confirm the benefits of apples, but preliminary research suggests their impact on aging, allergies, hair loss, diarrhea, and insulin resistance.
